Digital Payments Surge Reshapes How Businesses Operate in 2026
Rapid growth in digital payments and QR systems is reshaping transaction behavior, financial tracking, and pricing structures across Cambodia’s business landscape.
Cambodia’s digital payments ecosystem continues to expand rapidly in 2026, with measurable impacts on how businesses manage transactions, pricing, and financial operations.
According to the National Bank of Cambodia, the Bakong payment system has surpassed 20 million users, with transaction volumes continuing to grow year on year. QR-based payments are now widely used across retail, hospitality, and informal sectors, particularly in Phnom Penh and other urban centers.
This shift is reducing reliance on cash and accelerating the transition toward digital-first transactions. For many businesses, QR payments are no longer optional but expected by customers.
From an operational perspective, digital payments are improving transaction traceability and reducing cash handling risks. Businesses are increasingly able to monitor revenue flows in real time, which supports better financial management and, in some cases, improves access to formal financing.
At the same time, new considerations are emerging. Businesses are beginning to assess settlement timing, platform reliance, and integration with internal accounting systems. While QR payments are often low cost, long-term dependency on specific platforms is becoming part of financial planning discussions.
The shift is also influencing pricing behavior. Standardized pricing is becoming more common, as digital payments reduce the need for rounding and enable more precise transactions.
Cross-border payment integration is another area of development. Cambodia has expanded QR payment interoperability with countries including Thailand and Laos, enabling smoother transactions for tourism and small-scale trade.
Despite rapid progress, adoption remains uneven outside major cities. Challenges persist in areas such as digital literacy, system interoperability, and cybersecurity awareness. Not all businesses have fully integrated digital payments into their backend systems, limiting potential efficiency gains.
As adoption continues to scale, digital payments are moving beyond convenience and becoming a core component of business operations in Cambodia.
